Three young island athletes produced fine performances at the English National Cross Country Championship (all three are members of the Isle of Wight Athletic Club). The event was staged at Harewood House, Leeds on a tough undulating course on a unseasonably warm February day.
Pick of the performances must go to Henry McLuckie who claimed a place on the podium in the under 17 mens event. On a steady first lap Henry positioned himself near the front of the leading pack. As the pace began to increase on the second lap Henry was one of the 3 athletes who broke away from the leading group of runners. During the last 2km of the race the lead changed hands several times. In an exciting finish to the race, with the first 3 athletes separated by only 4 seconds Henry claimed the bronze medal in fine style.
In the Junior Men’s race, which was packed with international athletes, Brunel University student Sam Metcalf produced a fine run to claim a very creditable 36th place. Sam who is from Cowes, will be racing over 1500 metres at the Island Games in July.
In the under 17’s womens race Milly Bacon, who was recovering from a cold, battled hard over the tough course finished 182nd out a field of 320.
