It is with great sadness that we write that Ray Scovell has passed away. As part of the foundation of the Isle of Wight Athletic Club Ray inspired countless children to throw further, jump higher and run faster than they thought possible – but it was his enjoyment of the sporting community that shone through even more than the coaching and leadership Ray shared. Our thoughts are with his family.

Athletics Re-Start Update (iv)
Athletics Re-Start Update (iii)
With activity now permitted at the track (by England Athletics / Public Health England and the owners of the track IWC) the club has some new guidelines.
Although this is only for a limited number of athletes currently it is expected that some of the recommendations will remain in place for some time to come. At the same time it is also expected that restrictions on the club will continue to be lifted – and so eventually all club members will be able to return to training in some way.
The documents prepared by the club committee are in the links (below). It may be good information for all IWAC members.
IW Athletics Club Risk Assessment Version 1
IWAC Code of Conduct – Running Version 1
IWAC Code of Conduct – Throwers Version 1
There is also a supplemental document covering First Aid
IWAC First Aid during Covid Version 1
We look forward to being able to return to a full programme of activity – in the meantime please see this as a positive step IWAC are taking towards a safe re-start.
Athletics Re-Start Update (ii)
The IWAC, like many sports clubs, has been reviewing advice as it has changed throughout the period of lockdown. The committee had a meeting to discuss next steps and how to start club activities safely and within current rules. The main advice we are using is from Public Health England, the UK government and England Athletics. The Track is managed separately and our landlord is also involved in allowing access when appropriate.
The meeting was held with the principle that no club member (athlete, coach or volunteer) should be expected to do something that is not right for them. Although some Island sports clubs have re-opened at the IWAC we believe we can not do this safely at the current time. The track is not able to be used for training and this is likely to remain the case for the coming weeks.
Some coaches are able to take small groups when the track does re-open, but this will vary between discipline. For example managing throws and jumps equipment is different from a sprint group. It is also the case that whilst there are very unlikely to be any U11 competitions this season (with the Wessex League having been cancelled) there are likely to be Cross Country races in the Autumn. It is a complicated background.
Coaching volunteers at the club will be looking to discuss with some athletes training sessions. This won’t, unfortunately, be for most of the club membership in June, and for the 5-6 pm group on a Monday it won’t be before September. Whilst this is disappointing for many we trust that our members understand the situation – and the club is trying very hard to enable as many athletes as possible to be involved in a session as soon as possible. Please wait for the coach to contact you – and look out for future announcements here on the website. There are also club records to look through as well as an archive of club achievements from the past few years.
Things can change quickly, and the committee and other volunteers aim to re-start as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.
England Athletics Current Update (June 1st)
