South of England Championships Cross Country – Brighton 27/01/18

Four athletes from the Isle of Wight Athletic Club traveled to Brighton (Stanmer Park) with their coach (Paul Simpson) to compete in the South of England Championships. Whilst most of the team were gaining experience and competing for the first time in such a big competition Henry McLuckie ran in the leading pack and challenged for another title. Three older international runners took the medals this time, but Henry pushed right to the line claiming an excellent 4th place (out of 169 finishers). Flynn Powell, Milly Bacon and Mabel Lewis all competed well and the athletes supported each other in what was a great day of sport.

Henry McLuckie took joint top spot in the Hampshire League standings with a great win on the Prospect Park course. Campbell Laird and Justine Bacon also achieved top 10 positions in their categories – and with many other IWAC athletes getting their highest league positions of the year (despite some big Berkshire clubs competing) the winter training is paying off. Well done to all who finished this tough course.

Many thanks to the Isle of Wight County Press for the report and pictures.
