The first Hampshire League Cross Country match of the season was a world away from the hot sunshine 12 months ago. Rain greeted the athletes form the Isle of Wight Athletic Club to Kings Park, Bournemouth.
The first competitors were both U13’s, Archie Pearson storming to a brilliant 5th place after running with the leaders for nearly all of the course and for the girls Freya Taylor completed it coming 51st.
U15 Girls saw the IWAC team do well overall – Maisey Kent (21st), Naomi Holdsworth (32nd) Lily Barclay (42nd) and Evie Taylor (45th). The next event was the boys and Jacob Patey (37th) and Noah (45th) seemed to enjoy it the more it rained!
Both Under 17 teams finished 4th overall – which is great for the season ahead against big mainland club competition. Mabel Lewis was the first U17 girl back (11th), followed by teammates Milly Bacon (20th) and Eden Canning (27th). In the Boys event Campbell beat some excellent older runners to claim 4th place – followed in by Niall Powell (23rd) and Dylan Holdsworth (26th).
There were four islanders competing in the Senior races – Justine Bacon was first Islander home followed by Katie Lewis. Steve Haggerty returning to form in the mens race followed by Simon Lewis. Justine ran for Ryde Harriers with the others running for the Isle of Wight Athletic Club – both clubs benefit from Wightlink Sponsorship to help compete in these large mainland competitions.
