On Saturday the Isle of Wight Athletic Club went to Sparsholt college near Winchester for the second Cross Country Match of the season. The rain was relentless and with 96% humidity the course was the muddiest we have seen in years – but an excellent testing route through woods, over hills and around fields.
The junior events dominate the programme and Abigail Fancourt had the honour of being the first club member to race coming 49th for the U11 Girls. For the U13s Martin Carbajosa was 31st in his first XC race for the club, with Freya Taylor 33rd & Evie Longson 58th for the girls. The U15’s ran further, and the girls team came 7th overall with Maisey Kent a great 19th; Lily Barclay 35th; Naomi Holdsworth 42nd; Evie Taylor 46th; Mia Stillwell 50th; Jessica Heng 51st & Charlotte Fancourt 57th. The boys team were 9th, with Noah Patey 30th; Jacob Patey 33rd; Jackson Hill 62nd.
The Under 17’s for the Isle of Wight Athletic Club had perhaps the worst of the conditions – the course was churned up for the girls and deteriorated further by the time the boys raced. The IWAC girls team came 5th (Mabel Lewis 14th; Milly Bacon 23rd; Eden Canning 32nd ) – and the IWAC boys team came an excellent 3rd led home by Campbell Laird in 5th place, with Izaac Kent getting back into racing with a steady 19th, Niall Powell 27th; Dylan Holdsworth 31st and Max Collins 33rd also in his first race for the club.
In the Senior races there were three finishers form the Isle of Wight Athletic Club, with Steve Haggerty and Katie Lewis 146th and 149th – but the run of the day was from Henry McLuckie. 2nd overall in the Senior Mens race is a superb result – winning the U20 category by a long way and getting a huge amount of support from the rest of the club around the course.
